MattieLouiseWilhelmi OBITUARIES OBITUARIES The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to send a letter requesting that the Virginia State Corporation Commission hold a public hearing on a proposed rate increase by the water utility company that provides services to the Captains Cove community near Greenbackville. Tim Getek, a Captains Cove resident, said during a public comment period at the board of supervisors meeting that the recently announced increase a reasonable rate increase with regards to what we might expect, but one issue that we have is that, because it is a small utility in the state of Virginia, they are not required to have a public hearing to discuss the rate No detailed explanation for the increase was given to customers of Aqua, the utility that serves Captains Cove, Getek said in a Nov.

3 letter to Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Wolff. The State Corporation Commission allows for a hearing if residents petition for one, he said. Aqua Virginia acquired the Captains Cove public water and sewer system in December 2015, according to a letter sent to customers on Dec. 8, 2015. Another Captains Cove resident, John Ward, said around 150 of the required 250 signatures have been obtained on a petition asking for a hearing.

He spoke about the reason he said some residents want to talk to the State Corporation Commission. Ward said he talked to an Aqua executive around 6 months ago about the matter. a little convoluted, but what happened was the old utility company, Captains Cove Utility Company bought from our board the rights to use some land it was going to be a second nine- hole golf he said. The land was appraised at around $35,000 at the time, he said. The president of the former utility company was also the president of the Captains Cove board, Ward said.

bought these rights for $34,500, knowing he was going to sell those rights to Aqua for $300,000, which he he said. got the members of the Cove, the only rate payers, going to pay an extra $30,000 a year for ten years $300,000 and going to be a $270,000 profit in it for somebody Ward said, adding, something wrong Ward also said Captains developer owes Accomack County back taxes. developer of Captains Cove owes the county taxes. They never paid a dime since they took over four years ago. They owe the county $600,000 or $700,000 The thing that really questioning is, suing the county.

He owes the county $700,000 and suing the he said. In the lawsuits filed Dec. 30, 2015, CCG Land, LLC and CCG Note, LLC, asked the court to adjust by $400,000 the real estate taxes, interest and penalty due the county between 2011 and 2015 for more than 1,300 parcels at Captains Cove. The lawsuits alleged the county had valued the properties at more than their fair market value or not uniformly. Water proposed rate hike for Captains Cove draws petition CAROL VAUGHN.
