Gerald of 1 OJJUlIg 11UUU9 unlikely in most of U.S. WASHINGTON (AP) Most of the United States faces only slight danger of spring flooding, but parts of Alaska have cause for concern, the National Weather Service reported Tuesday.

"We've got good news for the most part," said Frank Richards, director of the National Hydro-logic Information Center. But, he emphasized: "It is not a guarantee." "Most of the country is snow-free," observed weather forecaster Dave Miskus, in the aftermath of a winter with wide differences in precipitation amounts from place to place. Record snowfalls melted and brought flooding to the Northeast in February, Richards said. Indeed, he said, the Northeast and parts of the Northwest have already "paid their dues" in spring floods. He warned, however, that flash flooding can happen anywhere if heavy rains occur, and that is the type of flooding most likely to cause deaths and injuries.

New radar and other equipment have helped improve warnings of flash floods, Richards said. "Lives can be saved if we can educate people" about flood dangers, particularly to avoid driving into 'flood waters, he said. The biggest potential problem with melting snow is in Alaska, where cold conditions created thick ice cover on rivers, followed by heavy snows. If the melt comes quickly, ice jams could spread runoff out into flooding along Alaska's Yukon, Kobuk, Koyukuk and Kuskok-wim rivers, Richards said. There also exists some flood danger in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, he said.
