Week of NOVEMBER 11 NOVEMBER 17,1998 THE OCEAN PINES COMPASS 3 Fell twins make their mark on SDHS soccer programs 9i iii i i.i. By Brand! Melllnger A few years ago, a soccer goal scored by Nicki Fell of Berlin might have really filled her twin brother, Stephen, with jealousy. But now, the two have grown, and they find it's better to support one another than to compete to be the better player. "We used to be like we were competing, but not anymore," Nicki says. The twins, sophomore superstars at Stephen Decatur High School, are wearing their parents' Scissors dull from all the newspaper clippings they cut when a paper's sports section features their names in bold headlines.

Surprisingly, there's really not a lot of competiveness between the two 15-year-olds, who have more in common than the same birthday Both Fells were starters on their varsity soccer teams as freshmen. Both make the honor roll each marking period. Both won several scholastic awards and both made the All-Bayside second team last year. So far this season, Nicki has successfully kicked 13 goals for and that was by his team. It's unusual to be that mature and focused at his age," Berquist says. "He picks up everybody around him either in classroom or on the soccer field." Still recovering from a knee injury he suffered last year, Stephen now plays the center-mid position, one that Nicki describes as one of the toughest on the field.

"You control the whole middle of the field," she says. "I'd end up missing a play or not getting there fast enough." Nicki says her favorite position used to be at forward because she got the chance to score a lot of goals. Now, she enjoys doing more than just lighting up the score board. The twins are quick to attribute their success both on and off the soccer field to their parents. "Steve and Nicki were just saying that their parents did a really good job with them," Fenzel says.

"They're both really good kids and they both give 100 percent." Soccer fills the Fell household more than the sweet smells of her team. "She does well. She does really, really well," a proud Stephen says of his sister. "There's whole teams who score only 20 goals." Amy Fenzel, Decatur's girls soccer coach, is just as proud of her star player as Stephen is. "For the past two years she's been the leading scorer," Fenzel says.

"She's been a dynamic addition to the team. She's definitely one of the top players in the area." Stephen, on the other hand, scored seven goals and managed six assists so far this season. He finished his freshman season with nine goals and nine assists. "I was moved to a different position this year," he says. Steve Berquist, head coach of the boys soccer team, says he has had few freshman starters during his 11 years of coaching, but "none with the maturity level and inspiring personality Stephen has." "It's only once every two years that I'll have freshman starter.

This an exceptional kid. He was even voted honorary captain Ocean Pines Compass -Grant L. Gursky TOP SCORER Nicki and Stephen Fell are twin soccer sensations on their respective teams at Stephen Decatur High School. County OKs developments upgraded sewer capacity by Brand! Mellinger Lighthouse Sound owner, Thomas H. Ruark, will be allowed a 7,000 gallon per day increase in wastewater flow at his development and golf course.

"The new plan calls for 94 home sites instead of 70," Ruark said as reasoning for the increase in wastewater. The amendment for the 24 additional homes was approved by the planning commission last June. "The-fact that it's a spray irrigation system requires it to be included in the county's water and sewer plan," said Ed Tudor, Worcester County's director of planning, permits and inspections. Any large-scale project must be part of the county's plan, he added. Lighthouse Sound, located near Ocean Pines on St.

Martin's Neck Road, had already been incorporated in the county's plan at 33,000 gallons of waste water a day. Because Ruark asked for an increase in wastewater flow, he was required to receive a recommendation from the county's Planning Commission before the existing plan could be revised, Tudor said. The planning commission unanimously approved Ruark's request at its Thursday, Nov. 5 meeting. get mad about it, but I still do it.

I always ask her how I played," Stephen says with smile. The Fells not only coach each other off the field, but from the sidelines as well, though making it to away games is often tough. "We're not at all in competition. We're more supportive than anything," Stephen says. apple pie or potpourri.

"That's all we do is soccer," Stephen says. "We talk about it, we watch it and we play in the backyard." And because they have been playing soccer since they were five years old, the twins are comfortable enough to often critique one another's techniques. "I do it more to her. She used to II their parents for safe-keeping. "I'm only allowed to spend $10 of it and the rest has to go in the bank so I'm going to buy the movie when it comes out," Walsh says.

"I'm going to put it toward a trip to go to a talent search or an acting show," Valentine says. Nuzback says he's not even sure how much he is getting but that it didn't matter because it was enough just to be involved. "If they called me again I would do it again in a heartbeat," he says. "It was a great very shocked and maybe slightly jealous of the three's famed opportunity. "We waited in the casting call line for four hours and he didn't and he got picked," says Nuzback 's wife, Cindy.

Walsh and Valentine agreed that their teachers and friends were impressed once they believed them. "All day long I was asked questions about it," Valentine adds. "I had to say didn't I already answer this question 500 times before." The children's first checks as working movie actors went to "Garry Marshall would say to me 'Good job, nice ride' and 'This is a whole lot better than school, Walsh says. Valentine, grinning from ear to ear, says he was lucky to talk and eat lunch with Roberts. "Julia said I was doing a real great job and she thought I was cool and cute," he says.

Even more surprised to receive a call from Aviano was Richard Nuzback of Bishopville. Nuzback is a not a member of the Starr Agency but he is the father of two clients. "They had been looking for a Richard Gere double all week and when they called me I remembered Mr. Nuzback as being someone they could maybe use," says Joyce Starr, owner of the agency Nuzback, who had long dark hair past his shoulders and a mustache, thought he would never be chosen when they got a look at him. "At first there were three guys they were looking at and then there was just me," he says.

"They asked if they could cut my hair and shave my mustache and I said sure." Like many of the other extras, Nuzback was notified the night before he was needed. Arriving at 5 a.m. in the morning, Nuzback began his transformation into Gere. "They just sprayed my hair grey with something called Strips and Tips," he says. Friends and family were also Continued from page 1 per," Valentine says.

Valentine, who presented a resume to the casting director during the casting call, says he has decided to pursue a career in acting since his movie debut last week. I "I think I'm a lot like Jim Carey," he says. "My friends and -teachers think I'm like him, too, because I just make a joke out of everything." His mother, Su Ann, agrees "saying his facial expressions are very similar to Carey's. Both Walsh and Valentine say they were able to rub shoulders with the directors and stars. Those articles address junk vehicle storage and requirements for such storage. "It's helping to tighten up the code and it's consistent with our comprehensive plan," said Planning Commissioner Ilia Fehrer. Barry Hallowell, chairman of the Marine Activities Advisory 'Committee in Ocean Pines said residents of Ocean Pines could have trouble with this regulation because many of the homes are just six feet from the property lines, leaving no room for legal storage of their watercraft. "There's a lot of people in Ocean Pines who would be immediately in violation according to the legislation," Hallowell said.

"The legislation, in thought, is good," he said, adding that something has to be done so Ocean Pines residents aren't held accountable for the incorrect storage of their recreational vehicles.
