19947. Donavon L. Orth GREENWOOD Donavon L. Orth, 57, of Greenwood died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Washington of heart failure. Mr.

Orth was a self-employed electrician. He was a Navy veteran and was active in the American Legion in Seaford. He served as state commander for the American Legion from 1983 to 1984. His wife, Mildred Shackleford Orth, died in March. He is survived by one son, Steve Orth Sr.

of Newark; one daughter, Donna Ralston of Nashua, N.H.; his mother, Marjorie Orth of Richland Center, four stepsons, David Alberts of Newark, Wayne Humphrey and Keith Humphrey, both of Salisbury, and Bryan Humphrey of Aynor, S.C.; and one stepdaughter, Katherine Price of Laurel. He is also survived by one brother, Gary Orth, and two sisters, Carla Husted and Barbie Garfoot, all of Richland Center. Twelve grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cranston Funeral Home at 300 Shipley St.

Dykes SALISBURY James M. Dykes, 84, of Salisbury died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Salisbury Center: Genesis ElderCare. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late S. Kent Dykes and Ethel F. Dykes.

Mr. Dykes worked as a truck mechanic for 35 years for International Truck, and retired in 1980 from what is now known as Barr International. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post 218 in Sharptown. He attended Grace United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lucy M. Dykes, and his stepchildren, Earl Dorsey, Wallace Dorsey and Raymond Dorsey, all of Salisbury; and two sisters, Lola Dykes and Frances Dykes, both of Salisbury. Eight stepgrandchildren and 11 great-stepgrandchildren, two nieces and one nephew also survive him. He is survived by a very good friend and army buddy, Ronald Bowden and his wife, Nettie, of Seaford. Four sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron at 11 a.m. The Rev. Theodore Day will officiate. Smith, 91, of Pocomoke City died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Hallwood, she was the daughter of the late Jerry William Hart and the late Flissie Gibbs Hart Mareno. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pocomoke City. She was generous in sharing of her God given gifts and blessings, and sharing the love of her Lord and Savior with the youth of the church. She i is survived by two sisters, Catherine Weaver of Chester, and Mildred Turnbull of Pensacola, two special cousins, Helen Mears of Onancock and Margaret Soulis of Pocomoke City; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also survived by a very special adopted family, Carol and K.W. Rantz and their sons, Ryan and Jamie; and dear friends, Pam and Jennifer Downs, Fran Wolf and Carole Evans, all of Pocomoke City. She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Wesley Hart; a sister, Hilda Hart; and two half-brothers, Jimmy Mareno and Tommy Mareno. A graveside service will be held Saturday at the Pitts Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in Pocomoke City.

Florence E. Smith Della Powell Massey SALISBURY Della Powell Massey, 80, of Salisbury died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown. Born in Powellville on Feb. 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary W.

Brittingham Powell. Mrs. Massey and her husband, Edwin Joseph Massey, were married for 56 years. They owned and operated Strabane Manor produce and poultry farm in Willards for 50 years before retiring to their home in Salisbury. She attended Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury and Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Willards.

She was a member of the Happy Timers and AARP. In addition to her husband, Edwin, she is survived by a son, L. Bruce Massey of Hagerstown; three brothers, John R. Powell Jr. of Fruitland, Billy Powell of Pittsville and Brownie Powell of Salisbury; five sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.

Two sisters, Lemuel P. Dryden and Polly P. Burton, and two brothers, W. Wilson Powell and Elton A. Powell, preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury. The Rev. Thomas W. Hurley will officiate.

James Leo Goss, 73, of Wingate, N.C., died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Louisville, on June 10, 1926, the son of the late Alphonse J.

and Veronica Kleber Goss. He was a retired employee of Armour Co. He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Roos Goss; one son, Jay Goss of Marshville, N.C.; four daughters, Becky Schwartz of Salisbury, Terry Nichols of Matthews, N.C., Gina Goss of Charlotte, N.C., and Lori Hartis of Locust, N.C.; two brothers, Richard M. Goss of Louisville, and Allan J. Goss of Waddy, Ky; and eight grandchildren.

Born Aug. 5, 1958, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late William W. and Christina Elzey McGlaughlin. Mr.

Wheatley was a member of Cambridge High School's class of 1975. He formerly had worked for C.K. Lord, and most recently worked for Custom Welding and Fabricators of Cambridge. Mr. Wheatley was a member of Jubilee Christian Fellowship Church in Cambridge.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Mr. Wheatley was also an avid Baltimore Orioles baseball fan and Washington Redskins football fan. Surviving are four siblings, Yvonne C. Yockey of East New Market, the Rev.

Leonard H. Wheatley Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Preston, Terry Edwards and her husband, Harry, of. Willards, and Michael Wheatley and his wife, Janet, of Cambridge; three nieces, Sara E. Wheatley of Cambridge, Krista B.

Wheatley Preston, and Teri Hubbard of East New Market; four nephews, Samuel Yockey, Kevin Yockey and David Yockey, all of East New Market, and Barney Edward of Willards. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a niece, Rhonda Cordrey. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home in Cambridge. Tilghman, 92, of Crisfield died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield. She was born in the Daugherty Town section of Crisfield on Oct. 10, 1907, a daughter of the late Alfred J. and Alida Ward Lawson. She attended the former Towson State Normal School in Baltimore and later received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maryland in College Park.

She taught elementary school first in Prince George's County, then later in Somerset County for 35 years. Following her retirement in 1973, she taught adult Bible literature for several years. In Crisfield, she was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church and the Chesapeake Chapter 28 Order of the Eastern Star, and a volunteer for McCready Memorial Hospital and Tawes Nursing Home. She was a member of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by a daughter, Anne B.

Muller and a granddaughter, Julia D. Berch, both of Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Simmons P. "Sim" Tilghman, died in 1977. A brother, Alfred J.

"Tut" Lawson and a sister, Vivian McCready, are both deceased. Graveside services and interment will be held noon Saturday at Sunnyridge Memorial Park near Crisfield. The Rev. Jim Riley will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Elzy Melvin and Cecilia Cooper Jernigan. He was a member of Melvin Elzy Melvin Elzy St. Paul AME Jernigan Zion Church in Salisbury, a member of the Senior Choir, and past member of the trustee board. He attended public school in Sollers Point, and graduated from Bowie State University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in school education. He completed further advance studies to earn both a master's and doctorate in elementary education.

He taught in the public school system for 33 years. He served in the community as a member of local PTAs, Parks and Recreation, Wicomico Sheriff's Department, One Hundred Good Men, Westside Revitalization Partnership, Wicomico' Partnership for Families and Children and Circuit City. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Joyce Williams Jernigan of Salisbury; one son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Verjuanne Cooper-Jernigan of Randallstown, one grandson, Greg Smith of Randallstown; one great -granddaughter, Kaviah Briana Smith; one brother, Kevin "Pee Wee" Wright of Baltimore; two sisters-in-law, Esther Martha Dashields of Salisbury and Clementine Williams Conway of Salisbury; three aunts, Mildred and Elaine of Randallstown, and Henrietta "Tiny" Williams of Norfolk, one uncle, Willie Cooper of Virginia Beach; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St.
