THE SALISBURY TIMES, SALISBURY, THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH 18, 1943 PAGE FIVE MILFORD BLAST TOLL NOW FIVE Camden Woman Dies Due To Explosion Injuries Milford, March 18-The death toll mounted to five as another victom of a powder room blast at Sussex Ordnance plant near here Tuesday died yesterday. The fifth death was that of Mrs. Eleanor Spence, Camden, Del. She was among the 12 workers burned when a sheet of flames spread through a frame structure in which they were loading shells. Others hurt in the explosion, second at the plant in a month, were reported in serious condition.

About 31 were injured. Only one man, Whitely Lewis, Laurel injured in the blast. He is in Milford Hospital, his condition critical. The four other women who died earlier were: Mrs. Pauline Maloney, Georgetown; Mrs.

Louise Hill, Milford; Mrs. Katherine Thomas, Milton, and Miss Edith Marker, Georgetown. Both plant and Navy officials were investigating the cause of the explosion today. Their first opinion on inspecting the building sortly after the accident was that it was due to "static" electricity in contact with particles of gunpowder in the air. 'The plant is owned by Triumph Explosives Corporation, Elkton.

Baltimorean Settles In Snow Hill After Cure Show Hill, March 18-Baltimore, lost a citizen this week, all on account of an open window. A sufferer from a throat irritation, Robert B. Falls, Baltimore, was warned to keep his bedroom windows closed tight at night. His irritation grew worse. Falls didn't fall out his bedroom window to decrease Baltimore's poulation by one.

Instead he came to Snow Hill on a business visit. For two nights he slept with his bedroom windows wide pen. Yesterday his throat irritation had vanished. Today, Falls rented a house, got job in Snow Hill and sent for his wife to join him in his new residence. Mrs.

Falls promptly accepted the bid. And the Feathers Fly Testing airplane safety glass, this gun fires a four-pound dead fowl at speed of 110 miles per hour to simulate conditions under which bird in flight would smash against plane windshield. Ordinary glass, above, splintered under impact, while safety glass merely cracked, eliminating hazard to pilots. Berlin Junior Gardeners To Sell Garden Products Berlin, March 18 Berlin's Junior Victory Army, numbering 197 youngsters ranging in from 5 to 17 years, have already started work on planting more than 100 victory gardens in Berlin. All vegetables harvested in the Berlin victory gardens will be pooled by the children and sold on a public market stand, now being built here.

Proceeds from the sales will be used to buy War Bonds and War Savings Stamps. Harry L. Molter, vice-president of the Berlin Business Men's Assois the organizer and commander in chief of the Junior Victory Army. Similar organizations are being formed throughout the state and peninsula. Congressmen Pleased With Show Of Guns Aberdeen Proving Ground, March 18-(AP)-Members of the House military affairs committee and a sub-committee on Army propriations of the House priations committee were wellsatisfied today that the Army was being supplied the latest in offensive weapons. The representatives spent most of yesterday at the Aberdeen Proving Ground where a full-dress showing of the Army's newest improved weapons was held for their benefit. After the demonstration climaxed by the thunderous explosions of "block-busters" dropped from Arm planes onto a target at the testing ground, officers quoted the solons as saying they were satisfied U.

S. troops were receiving the latest and most improved weapons of all types. Uncle Sam's armament, from Garand rifles to big guns, were shown to the representatives, one of whom was Rep. Clare Boothe Luce (R-Conn.) Maj. Gen.

Kerbin announced today that the case of Russell Mitchell, 31, held.

on a charge of criminally assaulting 9-year-old Pocomoke school girl, will come before the Worcester county grand jury here next Monday in Snow Hill. Mitchell was arrested by police in Jan. 1943, Kerbin said, after the child's parents had reported an attack made on their daughter on Oct. 4, 1942. The regular March Term of the Worcester County Circuit Court will open a two-week's session at Snow Hill Monday, at which time the 23 members of the grand jury will be selected.

Other criminal cases scheduled to be presented to the grand jury by State's Attorney Kerbin are: State vs. Nathaniel Corbin, 24- year-old negro of Snow Hill, held on a charge of assault with intent to kill Heston W. Carmean, a Worcester county constable. The officer was stabbed in the back with a knife on the night of October 3, 1942, while patrolling a street in Snow Corbin was arrested in Chester, on February 22 of this year. State vs.

Walter Parker, 35, of held on a charge larceny of a wallet containing $400 in cash from Harry V. Tubbs, business man of Selbyville, Del. Parker was arrested several weeks after the alleged theft in Hampton, Va. Two negroes, Raymond Beckett, 27, Snow Hill, and James Parsons, 42, Portsmouth, are charged with robbery. Several criminal cases of a minor nature will also be presented before the grand jury.

Mrs. Neisen testified at the trial yesterday in the Circuit Court of Cecil county that she was shot by Holly December 26 after he had halted her car on the Cecil county side of the bridge, where Holly was on guard duty, and then drove the automobile into a side road. She told the court that Holly made advances to her and when she resisted, pulled out a pistol and shot her in the chest.
