Monday night's nationally televised game has the 4-2 Washington Redskins entertaining the 5-1 St. Louis Cardinals, who share the NFC East lead with Dallas after knocking the Cowboys from the unbeaten ranks last week.

Pastonni is off to his best pro start, completing 55 per cent of his passes for 1,219 yards and eight touchdowns. Both Houston and Cincinnati are trying to rebound from losses last weekend. The Oilers lost to San Diego while the Bengals were trounced by Pittsburgh 23-6. "The looked awesmme last week," said new Falcons Coach Pat Peppier, whose club must contain kick returner Anthony Leonard and wide receiver Gene Washington if his club is to prevent the heavily favored 49ers from producing their best seven-game record since 1959. Fran Tarkenton goes after another milestone in Phi-ladlphia.

The Minnesota quarterback needs only 100 yards to become the second player in NFL history to pass for 40,000 yards. The NFL's leading passer, Roger Staubach, will be trying NFC East while his cluo defense tries to contain Chicago's Walter Payton the league's top rusher with 694 yards and six touchdowns in six games. Physical injuries to his quarterbacks continue to plague Los Angeles Coach Chuck Knox. Ron Jaworski is likely to start for the first time against the Saints since the opener. James Harris still is suffering from a sore shoulder while rookie Pat Haden, last week's starter, is available after suffering a concussion in that game.

Green Bay could take a major step toward playoff contention with its fourth straight victory matching last season's victory total. The winning streak has been "good for the spirit, the soul and morale," said Coach Bart Starr, adding that the victories have come against clubs with losing records. New England looked overpowering in routing the Jets Monday night and the Patriots know the way to beat Buffalo is containing O.J. Simpson. The Jets not only were humiliated by New England they were physically beat up and go against the strong Colts with quarterback Joe Namath and ing.

San Diego Coach Tommy Prothro said before the season, "We will be the best young team in pro football." After last weekend's upset of the Houston Oilers, Prothro said, "We now can be considered in a class with the best teams in the league. That doesn't mean to say we are better or as good as they, but we are with the best." Cleveland, 3-11 last year, which also has playoff hopes, will have veteran quarterback Mike Phipps in uniform, but Brian Sipe will start as Phipps recovers from a shoulder separation. Kansas City has dominated Denver with victories in 27 of 32 meetings, but the Broncos hope a strong defense and improved offense can produce 9 victory. Seattle enjoyed its first victory ever in regular season play at the expense of Tampa Bay, an expansion club like the Sea-hawks. Now the Seahawks go after a triumph against anoter team Coach Jack Patera believes his club can beat, the Detroit Lions.

Miami figures to take out its frustrations against Tampa Bay in the unofficial "Florida Bowl" 1 showdown. and defensive efforts have been a problem for the rebuilding Indians, but last week's performance, despite the loss, could turn this season around with a fine outing against the Lions. Parkside has its work cut out against Kent Saturday at Wor-ton. The Rams have the offensive punch with James Fields and Billy Jackson and the passing of Briant Hart, but the Rams haven't been up against a team like Kent this season. Should the Rams strike early, look for an upset, because the Wayne Miller led defensive crew is strong enough to repel the Trojans from ideas of staging a comeback.

Look for an upset here. It's the best bet. Snow Hill, the Bayside Cinderella team with a great shot in the state Class playoffs this season, goes up against once-beaten Easton Saturday. The Eagles, behind the running of Montier Fisher and passing of Tony Devereaux, considered by some as the loop's top quarterback, enters this game a slight underdog, but if emotion has anything to do with this game, an upset is inevitable. Moe Barber has a knack for coming up with the big win, but two in a row could be too much for the enterprising Eagles to stand.

Upset possibility still looms very strong, however. Winless Pocomoke looks like the best bet to snap its losing ways tonight against a winless North Caroline team. The Warriors have played most their games very close and Jon (Putt) Johnson should have a field day on the Denton turf. Billy Bloodsworth Bennett Booters Win, 1-0 Smyrna Defmar 1 Kiver Dover Air Bv HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer There may be little foot and plenty of arm in use Sunday when ths Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Oilers battle for first place in the American Football Conference's Central Division. Both teams take 4-2 records into the game at the Astrodome, which will be seen on television in most parts of the country.

As usual, the Bengals will depend on quarterback Ken Anderson, the National Football League's top passer the past two seasons. And the Bengals defense. No. 1 in the AFC this season, will he challenged by an offense directed by quarterback Dan Pastonni. "In my opinion, they have perhaps the best home run combination in pro football," said Bengals' defensive line coach Chuck Studley, rattling off the names of Pastonni and wide receivers ken Burrough and Billy "White Shoes" Johnson.

This is the halfway mark in an NFL season which has had plenty of surprises, including the 2-4 showing of defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh. The Steelers, who must beat out both Cincinnati and Houston to retain their conference championship, try to make up some ground at the expense of the winless New York Giants in another Sunday game. Bennett hosts unbeaten, untied Cambridge-South Dorchester High. Kickoff is slated for 8 p. m. The Clippers schedule became increasing tough after last week's thumping at the hands of Snow Hill. Bennett has to face an unbeaten team tonight, archrival Wicomico next week and fast coming Parkside the week after before closing out the season against a gritty Stephen Decatur team.

Bennett's Tom Bailey always seems to get his youngsters higher than a kite for Cambridge. Last year the Clippers bowed in a very close, hard fought and even controversial contest which some observers have remarked the Clips should have won. Bennett has been having its problems since the second game of the season, when the non-conference game with Atholton High was postponed from a Friday to a Monday night and then four days later, with injuries mounting, Bennett ran up against a rugged Easton which has lost but once in five games. Bennett hasn't seemed to have fully recovered from the Atholton contest. Easton won 20-0 before the Clips bounced back against a weak North Caroline team and later Pocomoke before last week's massacre.

In spite of it all Bennett shows a 4-2 overall recovered and could be a big surprise before the night is over if Cambridge should take them lightly. The Clips go in as a touchdown underdog. Cam-bridge-SD has strung up victories over Patterson, Wicomico, Parkside, Kent and Queen Anne's before being awarded a forfeit win over Stephen Decatur earlier this week. The tally camne at 14:20. The Wicomico Parkside clash, originally scheduled for yesterday, was postponed until today because of wet grounds at Wi Hi. Despite the close score, the Clippers dominated play, out-shooting the Sea Hawks, 20 7 and winning the corner kick edge, 5-1.

Decatur goalie Ronnie Kosowski collected 13 saves, while Bennett netman Dwayne Bounds had two. out of action since preseason with an assortment of ailments stemming from a bruise. Wicomico hopes to bounce back after last week's disappointing 14-0 loss to powerful Kent County High. The Indians travel to Centreville to do battle with Queen Anne's, a team to under go plenty of changes recently to bolster a sagging offense. On a day when the New York Nets were shipping the heart and soul of their franchise down the turnpike to Philadelphia and when 13-time AllStar Jerry West was finding out what it was like to coach, it was up to the classy captain of the Boston Celtics to lend some sense of order to it all. So John Havlicek scored 32 points, including six in the last three minutes of regulation play and eight in overtime, and sank his final eight shots as the Celtics rallied to beat the Indiana Pacers 129-122 in one of four National Basketball Association openers Thursday night. "That's him," marveled Indiana Coach Bobby Leonard. "He's been doing that all his life. That's what makes him one of the greatest." In other NBA openers, the New York Knicks trimmed the Los Angeles Lakers 102-97, the Houston Rockets beat the Atlanta Hawks 120-104 and the Buffalo Braves defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 133-112.

As for NBA xdebuts. it was mostly negative. Indiana, one of four teams absorbed from the American Basketball Association, was a loser. Among new coaches. West, of the Lakers, and Hubie Brown of the Hawks were losers, while Tates Locke of the Braves and Tom Nissalke of the Rockets were winners.

The Celtics, defending NBA champions, trailed by 18 points in the second period, when Boston center Dave Cowens picked up his fifth personal foul. But they closed to 63-57 at halftime and finally caught up on a basket by Sidney Wicks with 4:11 left. The teams then traded baskets until Havlicek's jumper with 49 seconds left sent the game into overtime. Havlicek then hit two baskets in the first two minutes of overtime as the Celtics broke it open. Charlie Scott added 28 points for Boston, Jo Jo White had 23 and Wicks had 21 in his debut with the Celtics.
